If Walls Could Talk
A talk, sponsored by Fordingbridge Museum, by Dr Cindy Wood on Graffiti in Winchester Cathedral will take place In Fordingbridge Town Hall on Friday 4th April at 7.30 pm.
Jane Ireland, Manager of Fordingbridge Museum said, “If people scratched graffiti on church walls today it would be regarded as sacrilege but in medieval times it seemed to be condoned by the church authorities. Some marks were made to ward off evil spirits, others were portraits or inscriptions reflecting disputes, commerce and trade or thanksgiving. The marks made, reflect what was going on in the minds of ordinary people at the time giving us a fascinating window into their world.”
Dr Cindy Wood is a senior history lecturer at Winchester University who has made a special study of the graffiti inside Winchester Cathedral. She has become an expert in decoding the secret language of these marks made by ordinary people who wanted their thoughts, ideas and fears recorded alongside the grand tombs and inscriptions of the wealthy.
